April is Water Conservation Month

James Cannon receives a proclamation from Mayor Gibbons in front of the other Town Councilmembers.

Mr. James Cannon, Intergovernmental Coordinator for the Governmental Affairs Program of the St. Johns River Water Management District, was the Town Council's guest at the meeting held on April 3. Mayor Gibbons presented a proclamation in honor of the Town's recognition of Water Conservation Month.

The proclamation read as follows:

Whereas, water is a basic and essential need of every living creature; and

Whereas, the State of Florida, St. Johns River Water Management District and  the Town of Orchid are working together to increase awareness about the importance of water conservation; and

Whereas, the State of Florida has yearly designated April, typically a dry month when water demands are most acute, Florida’s Water Conservation Month, to educate citizens about how they can help save Florida’s precious water resources; and

Whereas, every citizen can make a difference when it comes to conserving water for the good of the community and the environment; and

Whereas, the Town of Orchid encourages everyone to consider water efficiency when selecting and operating appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, when choosing and using showers, taps and toilets, and when installing and utilizing outdoor irrigation systems.

Now therefore, the Town Council hereby expresses its commitment to water conservation through responsible water management by all of its citizens; so

Be it resolved, that the Town Council of the Town of Orchid, in a public meeting held this 3rd day of April in the year 2024, does hereby proclaim the entire month of April as:

Water Conservation Month

Water conservation is of vital importance in Florida, where aquifers are shallow and easily impacted by activities/events on land. Although the Sunshine State is surrounded by water and features many lakes, streams, creeks and rivers, water sustainability is a serious issue for its fast-growing population.
