Town Election: Run as a Candidate!

Empty councilmember seats aligned along tables with the American flag in the background.

This is an election year in Orchid! Monday, April 1 is the first day of the local Qualifying Period for Town residents, who are interested in running as a candidate for Town Councilmember in Orchid's 2024 election. The deadline for qualifying is Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m. A candidate for Orchid must be a resident of the Town of Orchid and must be a local elector registered to vote in Florida. If you are interested,  please contact the Town Clerk to receive a Candidate Information Packet. The packet provides a lot of very helpful details and dates as well as necessary forms.

Two seats on the five-member Town Council will be up for election on November 5, 2024. Each seat will have a four-year term lasting through early November 2028.

Annually, the Mayor and Vice-Mayor are selected from the Council by the Councilmembers. The Town Council generally meets once a month on the first Wednesday at 9 a.m. for a regular meeting. In addition, special meetings may be called from time to time as needed. During summer months regular meetings are canceled, though special meetings may still be called as necessary. Annually, there are two state-required meetings in September scheduled about a week apart to adopt the Town's budget and it is the Town's legal counsel's preference for all Councilmembers to attend these in-person. Councilmembers also serve on a variety of regional/county committees regarding matters of interest in Indian River County and along the Treasure Coast.

Although Councilmembers serve without compensation, the "job" is very rewarding in other ways. Talk to current and former Councilmembers to get their perspectives. And of course, Town staff is happy to answer any questions you may have as well.
